cognitive load theory
September 04, 2024

Hello,

In 2017, on an X feed (previously known as twitter) a now famous tweet by Dylan William, a leading education researcher, reverberated in education and learning communities across the Western world.

'I've come to the conclusion Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory is the single most important thing for teachers to know' -Dylan William.

This quote opens Ollie Lovell's book, Cognitive Load Theory in Action, which features an introduction by John Sweller.

I've returned to this book a number of times in the last few years for guidance and reassurance.

I see the truth of Dylan William's tweet every time I observe classroom practise.

Students' cognitive load limits, both intrinsic load and extraneous load, are impacted by every decision a classroom teacher makes, for good or for poor.
